This shows over the time period of 1860-1920 the increase of the number of states passing laws for women's rights.
We are 5 sophomores from La Crescent Minnesota working on a school project about women's suffrage 1848-1920. We picked this topic because we (our group) are all women and support women rights. Also, History is one of our favorite classes.
For equality between sexes, men and women needed to have the same fundamental rights. Women's suffrage gave us our rights and made us a step closer to equality between gender. In 1917 between the months of June and November, 218 protesters from 26 states were arrested for obstructing sidewalk traffic outside the White House gate. Even after many women and protesters were arrested they came out from jail and were still fighting for their beliefs.
We believe that the women who fought for women’s suffrage were very brave and courageous. If these women had not fought for women's fundamental rights this battle could still be going on today. These women did something that changed the world we live in today. They took a stand and fought for what they believed in. We feel that since they went through such a struggle to get these rights, we should be able to exercise them freely. Taking advantage of the gift of equality should be something we do every day. These rights were something women fought for and earned. This is the reason why we are easily bothered when we see inequalities in our world today. Though women have the same rights as men, we do not consider ourselves to be completely equal to men. There are several examples of how gender inequality still exists in the United States today. Even though women have gone through great lengths for equality, there is still an imbalance in some salaries for the same job. To this day, statistics prove that males are earning a greater amount than females in certain areas. For example, in the science and engineering jobs 73% of the employees are men. There has never been a female president yet and the majority of the senate is men. Women didn’t want the right to vote just to simply say they had the right. Women wanted the right to vote so that they could have a say in what they thought was right. Lou Henry Hoover once said “That we have the vote means nothing. That was use it in the right way means everything.”(2) Now we’re not saying that females are above males, but that we as women can achieve anything a male can. Like George Carlin said, “Men are from Earth. Women are from Earth. Deal with it.”(1) The women’s movement impacted us greatly. Though we did not experience this change in our lifetime, our lives would be very different today if we didn’t have the equal rights that we have today. Not everything is exactly 50-50 but we have gained a lot of responsibility. The suffrage movement helped women to attend college and get professional jobs. When women payment increased, not yet to the amount of males, but this was a big jump for them. This movement also granted women with rights like property rights. 1) Source for quote: http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/tag/men-and-women 2) Source for quote: http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/tag/suffrage |
